Mysuru: Contract workers attached to the City Municipal Council stayed off their work demanding regularisation of their jobs, throwing the waste management in the country’s fifth cleanest city off gear.
About 35,000 contractual municipal workers are protesting across the state urging the state government to regularise their services.
Accusing government of going back on its earlier promise, around 2000 contractual workers in the district have stopped work and launched an indefinite protest in front of Mysore City Corporation office. They threatened of intensifying their agitation, if government fails to fulfil their demands.
Trash seen scattered throughout the city:
Following the indefinite strike by civic workers, trash has piled up at prime locations in the city, including the market and on major roads. None of the vehicles meant for transporting garbage descended on the road throwing the entire waste management system off gear on the very first day of strike.
Unable to bear the stench from the dumped waste on the roads, people were seen walking covering their noses. The situation may worsen, if measures are not taken on priority to resolve the issue.
