Mysuru: A video highlighting a torn and tattered national flag fluttering atop the 100-foot flag mast at Mysuru Railway Station has gone viral, sparking concerns about the upkeep of national symbols.
Chiranth Scindia, a resident of Nazarbad now working in Bengaluru, posted the video on X (formerly Twitter), tagging Union Railway Minister V Somanna and the Divisional Railway Manager of Mysuru. “Sir, the flag is still flying in this condition. This is not the first time I’ve reported it,” Chiranth wrote. He recalled raising a similar issue two years ago, demanding immediate replacement of the damaged Tricolour.
The flag mast, installed in 2019 as part of a national initiative to promote patriotism ahead of Independence Day, is one of 75 monumental flags across the country. It was erected with much fanfare and cost approximately ₹15 lakh. The mast holds a 20×30 ft flag, intended to fly proudly over the city’s prominent railway junction.
Citizens have since echoed Chiranth’s sentiments, urging authorities to treat the national flag with due respect. The Indian Flag Code mandates that damaged or disfigured flags must be removed immediately and replaced with a new one.
As the video continues to gain traction online, public pressure mounts on railway officials to take swift corrective action and uphold the dignity of the national symbol.
