Mysuru: International athlete HM Jyothi representing Bengaluru Urban created two new meet records each in 100mtr and 200mtr events at the state level Dasara sports meet athletic event. The 31-year-old who is a mother of a four and half year old baby girl was one among the three individual champions in women’s section.

Jyothi, with her outstanding performance proved that age is not the criteria to achieve in the sports. Competing with budding and promising athletes, on Day 1 of the four day event, Jyothi, the eldest among the participants came out with impressive performance to create new meet record in the 100mtr event. She clocked 11.6sec erasing the 11-year-old record of 11.8sec set by Gowramma of Mysuru division in 2005. On the last day, she continued her fine performance by creating one more new meet record in the 200mtr event. She clocked 23.90sec to erase the two-year-old record which was set by M Arpitha of Bengaluru Urban (2014) who had clocked 24.1sec.

Before coming to this event, Jyothi had won three gold medals in the open nationals held at Lucknow, each in 100mtr, 200mtr and 4x100mtr relay. She also won the individual championship award. The best part is that her performance has improved drastically after giving birth to a baby girl. Just six months after delivery, she was back to practice under the watchful eyes of coach Srinivas, Indian athletic team who also is her husband.

“My husband and Canara bank motivated me to take part in the Dasara sports. It’s really challenging to take part along with talented athletes. I enjoyed the event. My next meet is national games scheduled to be held in Goa in the month of January next year and Asian Tract and Field meet which is scheduled to be held at Jharkhand in June or July”. She missed a berth to Rio Olympic by a micro second. In Commonwealth games which were held in Delhi in 2010, she was part of 4x100mtr relay team which won the bronze medal. Jyothi works for Canara Bank in Bengaluru.
