Mysuru: After inspecting the Kukkarahalli Lake along with the environmentalists, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep ordered a temporary halt to the ongoing desilting work at Kukkarahalli Lake on Wednesday.
The decision from the DC came after the proposed development project at the lake, taken up by the District Administration and University of Mysore (UoM) at a cost of Rs 3 Crore, received flak from the public and environmental activists. Besides protests in front of DC’s office, scores of green activists had signed online petitions to stop the project.
Though the proposed project was taken up after getting approval from the Lake Development Authority, many people have been objecting to the desilting of lake saying it would have irreversible damage on the water body. “The desilting work was taken up at Kukkarahalli lake on both the ends – UoM and adjacent to Rangayana. The officials from Lake Development Authority are expected to visit the lake next week. Depending on their recommendation, further course of action will be taken up”, added Randeep. There was, however, a difference of opinion among the public over the desilting of lake with a few supporting it and others opposing it on the grounds that it would further deplete the water level.The ongoing various developmental works including desiling work was started on February 14.
This is the second time that the work has been stopped by the DC following mass opposition.
