Mysuru: Former Union Minister and Veteran Congress Leader R.L. Jalappa (90), has been selected for the D. Devaraj Urs award, 2015.
In an announcement made at a press conference here on Tuesday, Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya said that the award would be presented to Jalappa at the launch of the birth centenary celebrations of former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs on Aug. 20 in Mysuru.
Stating that a selection committee, headed by former Tumkur University Vice-Chancellor O. Anantharamaiah, had recommended R.L. Jalappa in recognition of his service for the welfare of Backward Classes, Anjaneya said that there was no interference from the Government.
The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 2 lakh, will be presented by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, he added.
R.L. Jalappa, who served as a Union Minster in the H.D. Deve Gowda Cabinet, runs several educational institutions under the banner of Devaraj Urs Educational Trust, which imparts free coaching for Backward Class students to prepare for competitive exams.
