Mysuru: Nanjangud MLA B. Harshawardhan has appealed to the government to withdraw from its decision to discharge the temporary, leased and outsourced employees of various universities in the state.
He met higher education minister C Ashwath Narayan here on Thrusday September 9 and handed over a plea stating that if the temporary employees were fired, they would get into financial distress amid the pandemic.
The Department of Higher Education has issued a letter to all universities on September 2 urging the immediate dismiss of those recruited in universities without the government’s prior approval. This applies to all faculty and non-teaching staff working on a contract, temporary or outsourced basis. The department also issued circulars 2 (on August 4, 2020 and April 6, 2021) regarding the same.
On September 6, he attended a special meeting at Gangubai Hanagal University, where many of the university’s staff met and said they had been working at very low wages for the past 5 to 10 years, and that their families would be in trouble if they were fired.
Harshavardhan explained to the minister that most of the employees had no other source of income. Considering the miserable condition of the employees and their families working in the universities, he has requested the withdrawal of the order directing the university to dismiss the temporary employees.
