In a collaborative initiative aimed at empowering economically and socially disadvantaged women, four organizations have come together to offer auto driving training as a livelihood opportunity. This comprehensive programme not only focuses on imparting driving skills but also includes essential life skills such as counselling support, financial literacy, self-defence, and spoken English. Currently, 11 women from underprivileged backgrounds have enrolled in this initiative.
The participating NGOs—Taliru Foundation, Bengaluru, Rotary Club Mysuru, Rotary Club Mysuru East, and NR Foundation—aim to equip these women with the necessary skills to capitalize on opportunities within Mysuru, particularly in the tourism sector, ensuring their financial stability.
Chitra AR, founder and director of Taliru Foundation, emphasized the program’s objective to foster self-reliance among women. She highlighted the financial challenges faced by many participants and underscored the program’s role in overcoming these obstacles. The training begins with car driving lessons, leading to obtaining driving licenses, and subsequently includes auto driving training.
The long-term vision is to enable these women to transition from driving autos to operating cabs. Essential life skills training is integral to preparing them for interaction with tourists, thereby enhancing their employability.
Sowmya S, an experienced auto driver and BBA graduate, will mentor the participants. Drawing from her own journey of driving autos to fund her education, Sowmya aims to empower other women through skill development and support.
