Environmental protection should be goal of Govt: Jogan Shankar

Mysuru: Environmental protection should be the goal of the government and it should frame a project to balance it. In the name of development, environment pollution and deforestation should not take place, said Jogan Shankar, Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University.

Speaking during three day ‘Karnataka Sociology Conference’ on topic ‘Development, State and Environment in Karnataka: Issues, Conflict and Concern’ organized by Department of Sociology of Maharaja’s College in association with Karnataka Sociology Association at Maharaja’s College Centenary Hall here on Wednesday, he said, “No doubt as population increases it demands certain infrastructures to be provided but it should not be at the loss of environment.” He also mentioned that we should create awareness among people about their role in bringing about social development.

R Indira, Retired Professor of Sociology, University of Mysuru and former secretary of Indian Sociological Society during her keynote address spoke on role of public and government in the developmental activities. She also mentioned that for any developmental activities both government and public should work in tandem.

Prof Major M Nagaraj, President of Karnataka Sociology Association said, “More than the economic development, sociology development should be the ultimate aim. Economic planning should keep in mind the social development. While framing any project, Government should also consider ideas of sociology experts.”

During the three day state level conference on Wednesday symposium on ‘Development: Conceptual Issues and Perspectives’ was presented by VK Natraj and G Shivaramakrishnan while on Thursday symposium on ‘Agricultural Development in Karnataka: A sociological Perspective’ will be presented by Chandrashekar Buggi, Chandrashekar Damble will speak on ‘Development: Environment Concerns and Topics, Richard Pais will present symposium on ‘Educational Development in Karnataka’. On Friday, the last day of the conference, Satyanarayana will be presenting C Parvathamma Memorial Lecture.

On the occasion the organsiers felicitated Jogan Shankar who happens to be the first person from Sociology department to become Vice Chancellor. Teachers, students including researchers in sociology from across the state are taking part in the three day conference.
