Expired Pesticide Destroys Tobacco Crop in Mysuru
A pesticide spraying error has left farmers in M. Shettahalli village devastated, with 2.5 acres of tobacco crops destroyed due to the alleged use of expired agrochemical KANMIDDR. The incident occurred on farmland belonging to a local cultivator and was reportedly caused by Washim, the owner of Marakudu WM Tractor, who sprayed the crop with the wrong pesticide.
Farmers claim that although the pesticide was purchased from a certified store, it was either expired or unsuitable, resulting in the tobacco crop being ruined before harvest. This has triggered widespread anger among the farming community, who now face significant financial losses.
Adding to their frustration is the alleged inaction of Agriculture Department Officer Mahesh, who, according to farmers, failed to visit the affected field despite being informed. Locals also hold the agrochemical store owner responsible, demanding accountability for selling inappropriate or expired stock.
“The bite came before the harvest could reach our homes,” lamented one farmer, referring to their shattered hopes and income loss. The incident has intensified calls for immediate compensation, and farmers have urged the authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly and take strict action against those responsible.
Farmers are also seeking reforms in the distribution and regulation of agricultural chemicals, warning that such negligence can lead to repeated tragedies and deepen rural distress.
