Farmers worried as water level drops in Kabini

Mysuru: The water flow level has been further reduced as farmers have intensified their protest. Even though the government succumbed to people’s protest and reduced the water flow to neighbouring state, the storage limit has dropped and now is only 72ft in the reservoir.
Farmers in and around the reservoir have grown various crops in the 1.20 lakh acres of land. Meanwhile, more than 5000 cusecs of water was released to Tamil Nadu from the Kabini reservoir from the past few days.

“Whenever the Kauvery issue pops up, Tamil Nadu targets Kabini reservoir and empty stored water from the reservoir. But those farmers who are depended on the reservoir are helpless as they have already grown various crops but no water”, one of the farmers said.

He added that the dead storage level of the reservoir is 52-feet which cannot be used for cultivation. The remaining 20ft of water can be used for agriculture. If they continue to release water, in summer farmers will be left with no water for cultivation.

Earlier, the state government had clarified that water was released as per distress formula which triggered the protest across the district.
