Five Mysuru Residents Tricked into Fraudulent Job Scam in Thailand’s Golden Triangle
Five residents from Mysuru were duped into traveling to the Golden Triangle, a region in Thailand, with promises of lucrative job offers, only to find themselves trapped in a scam. The victims, initially offered jobs at a call center in Laos with a salary of Rs 60,000, were later coerced into engaging in fraudulent activities.
According to the FIR registered by the city’s Cybercrime, Economic Offences, and Narcotics (CEN) police, the victims were first recruited through an online interview and added to a Telegram group. They, along with five other Indian nationals, traveled to Laos, then were moved to the Golden Triangle, where they were trained to open fake accounts on social media and lure people into investing in stock market scams via fraudulent applications.
The victims were instructed to chat with men over 40 years old, pretending to be women, to manipulate them into investing in these fake platforms. When they resisted, they were assaulted, locked in a room, and threatened. The scam operators demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh to release them.
After an employee at the scam operation advised them to report the situation to the Indian embassy, the victims successfully contacted officials who intervened and helped secure their release with police assistance.
The CEN police have filed charges under IPC Sections 120B, 365, 367, 370, and 420, along with provisions of the IT Act, against the unidentified perpetrators. Authorities have warned the public to be cautious when considering job offers abroad or investments in stock market applications, as they may be part of such scams.
