Mysuru experienced a dramatic weather shift last night as heavy rains paired with thunder, lightning, and strong winds cooled down the scorching summer but left a trail of destruction across the city and its outskirts.

The downpour, which began lightly around 8:30 pm, intensified by 9 pm, catching motorists—especially two-wheeler riders—off guard. Roads turned chaotic as trees and large branches fell, snapping power lines and damaging poles and transformers.

On Temple Road in V.V. Puram, a parked car was crushed by a fallen branch. Another major branch blocked the road near Ramakrishna Ashram, while ESI Hospital on KRS Road saw electric poles tilting dangerously after a tree collapsed on live wires.

Over 15 massive branches fell between Deve Gowda Circle Junction and Bannur, obstructing roads near Vidya Vikas Engineering College. Several electric transformers burst, causing widespread power outages. Areas like JP Nagar, Jayalakshmipuram, Vontikoppal, Yadavagiri, and Bannimantap also witnessed similar damage due to fallen trees and debris.

Stormwater drains overflowed, with manholes spewing sewage water near New Sayyaji Rao Road, flooding several roads and mixing with rainwater.

In Doddamaragowdanahalli, a 250-year-old banyan tree was uprooted, crushing mango trees bearing fruit worth lakhs and pulling down two electric poles. The mangoes, set for harvest within days, were completely destroyed.

Emergency teams from CESC and MCC’s Abhaya unit worked through the night to clear fallen trees and restore electricity in affected areas.
