Highway robbers trapped in action

Mysuru: The Hunsur police succeeded in nabbing five men in filmy style when they were attempting to loot the passengers travelling in private vehicles near Periyapatna on the night of January 10.

Amir, Francis,Abdulla, Fairoz, Sunil and vehicle driver Ramesh alias Bikla were arrested by the police.

Robbers had parked their Scorpio vehicle bearing no KA–05-8899 on the road leading to Virajpet from Chilkunda to loot innocent passengers travelling en route. Three vehicles refused to stop midway and informed the police at Periyapatna, suspecting them to be highway dacoits.

After Periyapatna police relayed the information to their counterparts in Hunsur, the team swung into action immediately and formed three teams to apprehend the robbers. They surrounded the men on the prowl from 3 sides and succeeded in nabbing all five of them.

During interrogation, the robbers revealed of switching to highway robbery after they failed to find the right kind of trees for felling and trading illegally. They had felled teak trees valued over Rs 5 Lakh in the last 3 months, police revealed.

Police seized lethal weapons, tree logs, Rs 37,000 in cash and few packets of chilli powder from them.

All five men were later produced in the court which remanded them to judicial custody.
