Tipu controversy: Right wing leader killed in violent clashes

Speaking about the incident, Kodagu SP said that Kuttappa did not die due to stone pelting but due to falling from a 15-ft high compound wall.

“When the situation went out of hand, the police resorted to lathi charge. To avoid this, Kuttappa ran away and climbed the compound wall of a hospital. When he tried to jump the other side, he sustained a head injury which caused his death,” he informed.

Madikeri: Kuttappa(50), who was injured in the violent clashes that erupted while opposing the state government’s move to celebrate Tipu birth anniversary breathed his last at the hospital. Two others were injured. Cops resorted to lathi charge to disperse the crowd.

Two groups clashed in Madikeri here on Tuesday morning and pelted stones.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the town following violence clashes over celebrating Tipu Sultan’s birth anniversary.

IGP(Southern range) B K Singh visited Thimmaiah circle to take stock of the situation.

Tipu birth anniversary: BJP, pro-Hindu outfits call for bandh in Kodagu

Kodagu: The first ever Tipu birth anniversary will be celebrated by the state government on Tuesday despite opposition from BJP, RSS and other organisations. A function will be organised at the Banquet Hall in Vidhana Soudha.

BJP and other groups have called for a Kodagu bandh opposing the move to celebrate Tipu’s birth anniversary. Meanwhile, Police force has been deployed at Tipu’s memorial at Shirangapattana, in Mandya. According to sources, few miscreants pelted stones at government buses in Madikeri here on Tuesday morning opposing the celebration.

The Congress government, in honour of Tipu Sultan fighting the British till his end, had decided to celebrate the Tipu birth anniversary as a state festival.

The function will be addressed by noted litterateur Girish Karnad, Talakadu Chikkarange Gowda, Prof Shaikh Ali, Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Prof N.V. Nagarajaiah and Vatal Nagaraj. The function will be attended by chief minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues. Meanwhile, the BJP decided to boycott the function.
