Mysuru: In an unprecedented protest, a section of employees at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) decorated the administrative building with a garland of currency notes, symbolizing alleged corruption within the institution.
Why the Protest?
The KSOU Permanent Non-Teaching Employees’ Association has long demanded transparency in university administration. According to Pradeep Giri, association secretary, KSOU has faced a deficit budget for the last 4-5 years, with revenue being only half of its expenditure. Despite a financial crisis, the university continues to recruit new staff, which the employees oppose.
Allegations Against KSOU
- Violation of UGC norms in admissions, risking de-recognition of the university.
- Misuse of guest house revenue for undisclosed purposes.
- Unjustified recruitments despite financial instability.
Heated Exchange & Symbolic Protest
During the protest, a verbal altercation broke out between Registrar K.B. Praveena and the agitators. In response, a few protesters hung a garland of currency notes on the university building to highlight their allegations.
KSOU Management & Government Response
- Registrar Praveena dismissed the protest as a ploy to fulfill a personal agenda, stating the agitation was triggered by the transfer of a non-teaching staff member as per rules.
- Vice-Chancellor Sharanappa V. Halse was unavailable for comment.
- Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar has sought a detailed report on the incident.
