Mysuru: Residents of Siddarthanagar near Chamundi Hills were left stunned after a leopard strayed into a house and calmly took a nap under a cot, before being safely rescued by forest officials on Saturday morning.

The unusual incident came to light when a housemaid entered a room and noticed the animal resting quietly beneath a bed. Shocked by the sight, she immediately alerted the homeowner, triggering swift action from authorities.

Discovery shocks residents

According to the house owner, Suresh, the incident began early in the morning around 7.30 am when dogs in the neighbourhood started barking continuously. Sensing something unusual, he stepped out to check and noticed forest department personnel moving around the area following reports of a leopard sighting nearby.

Unaware that the animal had already entered his house, the situation escalated when the housemaid later spotted the leopard resting indoors. The discovery caused panic in the locality, with residents gathering at a safe distance as officials arrived.

Leopard rests for nearly two hours

Officials said the leopard appeared calm and did not show aggressive behaviour. It reportedly remained inside the house for nearly two hours, resting under the cot without causing harm or damage.

Forest department personnel quickly cordoned off the area to prevent any human-wildlife conflict and ensured that residents stayed indoors during the operation.

Rescue operation by forest department

A team from the forest department launched a carefully planned rescue operation. Using standard protocols, they tranquilised the leopard and safely removed it from the premises.

The animal was later shifted to a forest area, where it will be assessed before being released back into its natural habitat.

Rising human-wildlife encounters

Such incidents are becoming increasingly common in areas close to forest zones like Chamundi Hills. Rapid urban expansion and habitat loss are often cited as reasons for wild animals straying into residential areas.

Experts note that leopards are adaptable animals and may enter human settlements in search of food or shelter, especially during early morning or late-night hours.

Safety advisory for residents

Forest officials have urged residents living near forest fringes to remain cautious and report any wildlife sightings immediately. Key precautions include:

  • Avoid stepping out alone during early hours
  • Keep doors and gates secured
  • Do not attempt to approach or provoke wild animals
  • Inform authorities at the earliest sign of wildlife movement

Conclusion

The incident ended without any injuries, thanks to the timely response of the forest department and alert residents. However, it serves as a reminder of the growing overlap between human habitats and wildlife, highlighting the need for awareness and coordinated efforts to ensure safety on both sides.
