Lingabudhi lake getting a facelift

Mysuru: The Lingabudhi lake is quietly getting a facelift without affecting the flora and fauna at a cost of Rs 1.74 Crore under Nagar Vana-Udyan Yojana of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.

Among 200 cities across the country, Mysuru is among the city, which has been selected under Nagar Vana-Udyan Yojana, with the aim of creating awareness on plants and biodiversity, conservation education on important flora and fauna of the region, ecological rejuvenation of the forest green lung space which will contribute to environmental improvement of cities by pollution control, noise reduction, water harvesting, biodiversity conservation and making cities resilient to climate change.

V Karikalan, Deputy Conservator of Forests, said, “The developmental work which has been undertaken at Lingabudhi lake includes a new bund which has been constructed to make the lake a perfect paradise for the morning strollers. Now, the bund which runs closer to 8 kilometers is being strengthened and widened. A rare species of trees like rosewood, teakwood and sandalwood will be planted at Raashi Vana as soon as the city receives another spell of rain. An earthen embankment to prevent flooding of park area during rainy season is under construction. A structure which resembles Chipko movement to inspire children about the need to protect trees and plants will also come up at the new entrance arch. The number of visitors to the Lake has increased manifold since the rejuvenation of the lake.”

What is Nagar Vana Udyan?

According to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, “The Nagar Vana-Udyan is a forested area in the vicinity of a city accessible to the city dwellers suitably managed for providing natural environment for recreation, biodiversity conservation and supported services like water and soil conservation, pollution abatement, reduction of heat islands effect of the city with the essential elements for regular use.”

Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tripura,Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Delhi and Chandigarh.
