Madikeri: A BJP-backed candidate who filed nomination for the GP election from Yemmegundi in Pollibetta from the jail has won the local body polls.

Puliyanda Bopanna has registered his hat trick victory this time.

He had served two terms as Panchayat member and also as the Panchayat President. However, when the elections were announced, he was behind the bars following a complaint from a Dalit man.

Seeking permission from the court, he filed his nomination as a BJP-backed candidate from the jail.

The locals think that Bopanna’s good work has contributed to his success. He defeated his contender, a Congress-backed candidate by 66 votes.
