Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) celebrated the 25th annual “Kail Poud Namme” at the Middle grounds Mandh, Madikeri, on September 1, on the eve of Codava Audhapooja. Codava martial tribesmen from across Kodagu showed their solidarity for the continuation of their special Arms Exemption Rights.
Codavas met in a congregation at middle ground Mandh in Madikeri at about 10.30 AM and held a mass Ayudha Pooja with religious fervour. Rituals were performed on traditional Codava weapons- Thokk -Odi Katthi and Peeche Katthi Pooja along with the agro-implements. This was followed by a vehicular procession through the thoroughfare of Madikeri, which culminated at the Capitol Village, where celebrations were held.
This is the 25th public Kail Poud Namme celebration. The event witnessed Codava Cultural programmes on Dudikott Paat, Karona Paat, Pariyakali, Thenge Bodi (Coconut Shooting) followed by tasty Codava cuisine laid out to relish.
Meanwhile, the CNC has demanded the government to declare a government holiday on Kail Poud from August 31 to September 4.
“Kail Poud” marks the end of the sowing season in the region, where all agriculture-related activities come to a grinding halt for a few days. Special Codava pork dishes and rice varieties are prepared during the festival, celebrated on September 3, across the district.
