CNC to protest on Feb 21 demanding better representation for Codava language

Madikeri: Demanding inclusion of Codava language in 8th schedule of Indian constitution and urging United nations (UN) to recognize Codava as one of its official languages, Codava National Council (CNC) will protest in front of Deputy commissioner’s office on February 21, Observed as International Mother Language day by UN.

Disclosing the details at a press briefing CNC President N U Nachappa placed a charter of demands.

The CNC has demanded inclusion of Codava language words in Oxford dictionary annually when it adds 15,000 new words and demanded inclusion of Kodava tribes under Constitution schedule 340 and 342 by parallel providing constitutional guarantee. Including Codava language under rule 350 b of Indian constitution as well as incorporating the language in school text books under rule 347 were among CNC’s demands.

Treating Codvas as minorities, they should be allowed to start education institutions under columns 29 and 30 of Indian Constitution.Broadcasting national and regional television and Radio programs, publishing gazette notifications and recognizing Codava language in line with Konkani and French languages.

State government should declare holidays for all Codava festivals and rename ancestral villages with original Codova names instead of Kannada names are among other demands.
