Madikeri: The tiny district of state with hilly topography has less crimes in recent years, thanks to effective policing by the department. Superintendent of Police P Rajendra prasad also received a President of India medal for meritorious service recently.

The department is facing shortage of staff as in rural areas houses are situated far from one another. However, the police personnel succeeded in reducing the crime rate and there is no case pending detection in the department.

The district has a total of 20 police stations including women police station, cyber police station, traffic police station in Madikeri and another traffic police station in Kushalnagar. The department has 568 police constables including head constables. The department introduced 568 new beat systems which involves 23,492 people.

The department also installed 80 CCTV cameras in major locations and is in the process of installing another 120 CCTV cameras for which MLCs Veena Achaiah and Sunil Subramani have sanctioned Rs 5 Lakh each from their legislator’s grants.

Speaking to media on Sunday, SP Rajendra Prasad informed that the department had planned to install 400 CCTV cameras all over the district to check anti-social elements. He said that every policeman should think he is a civilian in uniform while every person should think they are policemen in mufti. He said a proposal of Rs 1 Crore had been sent to government for installing traffic signals in the district.

He said the government had recruited 160 policemen and would join the force after completion of training and thus there would be no shortage of personnel anymore.

The police department also made some major breakthroughs under the supervision of SP Rajendra prasad. On 26 July 2016, Gonikoppa police succeeded in nabbing three inter-state thieves and recovered Rs 27.43 Lakh worth of pepper and gold. On 24 November 2016, Kushalnagar police arrested 9 accused and recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 52 Lakh with in few hours of dacoity. On 15 August 15 2016, Virajpet police arrested three accused who had waylaid a businessman going from Kerala to Mysore and robbed him of Rs 38 Lakh at gun point.

Following stringent action, traffic violations and crimes have come down drastically in the district.
