Madikeri: In a shocking incident, famous tusker Rowdy Ranga, who was captured from the Bhanatarakuppe Forest near Magadi in Bengaluru about two years ago, died in a road mishap.
It is said that Ranga suffered severe injuries after a speeding Kerala registered private bus hit him at around 2 am on Monday near Aanechoukar on the Mysuru-Kodagu border. Ranga suffered severe injuries to his leg and back.
According to the forest authorities, the department was busy making preparations to take Rowdy Ranga to Mysuru for the Dasara festivities, but he succumbed to the injuries.
The Kerala registered bus was ferrying passengers from Calicut to Bengaluru.
“According to our preliminary investigation, the elephant was standing on the roadside and the driver didn’t notice him. He hit the elephant causing his death. No passengers were injured in the accident,” said police.
Ranga, famously known as “Rowdy Ranga”, was known for his ferocious and rough behaviour. He was termed as a “terror”, as he was a nightmare for the villagers around the Savanadurga forests. Ranga was given the title of “Rowdy” by the villagers.
The operation to capture Ranga had involved 70 forest department personnel.
