Madikeri: The home stays mushrooming in Kodagu district without permission from the district administration have turned into dens for illegal activities, alleged veteran leader M C Nanaiah. Flesh trade, gambling and all other illegal activities are rampant in these places and the district administration has to keep a tight vigil to prevent further danger, he cautioned.
Infiltration of Naxalites and terror elements cannot be ruled out, said Nanaiah, who has been continuously opposing illegal home stays in the district.
Coffee growers opted for home stays, when the coffee prices dropped in international market as an alternative source of income. Most owners of illegal home stays, in recent times, have thrown caution to the winds, despite the laws and guidelines existing for setting up such home stays, Nanaiah rued.
Local residents have remained clueless as many outsiders have established many home stays with ease, without obtaining permission from authorities concerned. In such a scenario, the district administration and the police department have to take note of this development, before trouble erupts, Nanaiah warned.
