Madikeri: The homeless tribals in Madikeri are continuing the protest for their occupancy rights. The adivasis of the region marched to the DC’s Office from Field Marshal Kariayappa Circle under the leadership of Karnataka Adivasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti.

The protesters warned that they would start “Jail Bharo” movement if the district administration did not respond favourably to the demands.

They alleged that their pleas for providing homes for more than 10,000 homeless adivasis in the district, had fallen on deaf ears. The leaders also complained that the administration was unresponsive to the plight of the poor.

Secretary of the organisation Y K Ganesh lamented that many adivasis worked as bonded labourers since they are crushed under the burden of heavy debts owed to the estate owners.

The protesters gave the district administration 15-day ultimatum to meet their demand.
