Madikeri: ‘Madikeri Chalo’, the massive protest staged by the Bhoomi Mathu Vasathi Hakku Vanchithara Horata Samiti and other progressive organisation in support of Diddalli tribals bagged outstanding response on Friday.
The protesters demanded construction of the huts/houses on the same land where they were pulled down by the forest department officials, inquiry and suspension of some tainted officers, transfer of Social Welfare Department Officer Mahadevi Galagali, distribution of land to siteless, poor and the Dalits etc.
Samiti Convener Noor Shridhar said that the entire state is standing in support of Diddalli victims.
He said that the plantation owners have joined hands with the forest department officials in Diddalli so as to prevent the tribals from getting their own lands, because once the tribals become cultivators, then the plantation owners will not get tribals to work as bonded labourers in their plantations.
“The protesters are not doing anything outside the legal framework. We are only keeping forth our legitimate demands. Since the houses of the tribals were snatched away without any reason, we are adamant that new houses must be built on the same land,” he said
Former MLA and progressive thinker A K Subbaiah inaugurated the protest by beating drums.
