Madikeri: Based on a tipoff that the Madikeri jail premises have become a hub for narcotics and illegal activities, Kodagu Superintendent of Police (SP) accompanied by senior officials and staff raided the jail premises on October 3 and seized 6 mobile phones, 4 mobile chargers, 2 mobile batteries, knives and cash from the inmates.
The police department initially requested the jail superintendent to inspect all the inmates and take necessary action. In response, the jail superintendent expressed his inability to do the same due to shortage of staff citing more than 200 inmates in the jail premises.
Soon after, the police team led by district SP raided the jail premises in Karnangeri on the outskirts of Madikeri city and confiscated the mobile phones, chargers, batteries, knives, hacksaw blades and cash amounting Rs 31,665 from the inmates. Based on the complaint lodged by the jail superintendent, Madikeri rural police registered a complaint under different sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
SP Rajendra Prasad was accompanied by Tahsildar of the area, senior police officials in the department, bomb diffusal squad, dog squad and staff from rural police station and state reserve police.
In recent past, there are several complaints from different jails across the state where inmates are involved in group fights and drug trade. In Mangaluru jail, deaths have been reported in the recent past. Keeping these in view, the SP promised to conduct periodic raids to prevent such activities.
