Madikeri: Even during the times of distress, there are people among us who look to profit from the misery. The recent floods in Kodagu are no exception to this.
While the relief materials are pouring in from different quarters, locals are complaining that the materials are being stolen and diverted to the middlemen. Sources said that huge quantity of food, water bottles, blankets and clothes, meant for the victims of the floods are being sold in the open market for a profit.
Locals complained that there was no security for the relief materials stored by the district administration. Following this, the valuable items are being diverted by middlemen who supply these items to various shops.
Responding to the complaints, Deputy Commissioner P I Sreevidya said that all the rescue and relief centres had been instructed to provide adequate security at the storage facilities. The officers will be held responsible for the theft of any materials, she added.
