Mandya: As the State Assembly election heats up, the names of Vokkaliga warriors Urigowda and Nanjegowda are heavily discussed in the political circle. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Mandya, an entrance was built in the name of Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda. The BJP leaders had claimed that these were the same soldiers who had killed erstwhile King Tipu Sultan. After this, Congress and JD (S) attacked BJP saying Urigowda-Nanjegowda were fictional characters. Now Urigowda, Nanje Gowda issue has come to the fore again in Mandya. The name of Urigowda-Nanjegowda is recorded in Suvarna Mandya book, revised edition in 2006 itself

The name of Urigowda-Nanje Gowda is proposed in Suvarna Mandya book of Prof. Jayaprakash Gowda’s revised edition. This book was released in 2006 under the editorship of Dr. D . Javaregowda. It is a book of 500 pages which tells the history of Mandya. This book was presented in a celebration held in 1989 to mark 50 years of the formation of Mandya District. Later, Suvarna Mandya book was released in 1994 at the 63rd All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelan. But in the book it is not mentioned that it was Urigowda – Nanjegowda who killed Tipu. Urigowda and Nanjegowda were said to have stood firm against Tipu.

When PM Narendra Modi came to Mandya, the entrance made to welcome him was named Urigowda and Nanjegowda. But overnight it changed to Balagangadharnatha Swamiji. After this, BJP National General Secretary C. T. Ravi strongly defended that Vokkaliga warriors Urigowda and Nanjegowda killed Tipu. The JD (S) Congress, which opposed this, attacked the BJP. Former CM Kumaraswamy declared this as BJP’s bias towards Vokkaligas. BJP is showing disrespect to the Vokkaliga community by creating people who do not exist in history. He said they should protest against this.

In his tweet, Kumara swamy said BJP, which has done the job of wooing the Vokkaligas by installing the statue of King Kempegowda, on the other hand has created a conspiracy to smear the stigma of Tipu’s murder and cast a black mark on the Vokkaliga community.

Then BJP Spokesperson C. T.Manjunath released another evidence in Mandya itself had released a Lavani song from 70 years ago. The Lavani song says Vokkaliga warriors killed Tipu. He has sent song CD by courier to KPCC Office and JDS Central Office.
