Mandya: A girl child was born with Harlequin ichthyosis, a rare genetic skin disorder, at Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences (MIMS) on Tuesday, January 28 night.
The child was born to a couple from Ramanagar. Dr Geeta provided the medical assistance during the delivery.
At present, the infant is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of MIMS.
The doctors have said that this condition might have occurred due to a mutation in the ABCA 12 gene and that the treatment might cost lakhs of rupees.
Medical Superintendent of MIMS Dr M R Harish said, “One out of five lakh children are born with this skin disorder. The child is being treated in ICU currently.”
It can be recalled that earlier, kids with the same disorder were born in Assam and Uttar Pradesh. The mere sight of the unfortunate children made the people dub them as “Demon’s Child’.
