Mysuru: In a renewed push to eliminate banned single-use plastics, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has intensified its enforcement efforts. Commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif announced that in addition to imposing hefty fines, repeat violators will now face legal consequences, including the filing of FIRs.

On Sunday, Commissioner Asif led a surprise inspection of several commercial establishments along Santepete Main Road and Sivarampet, key parts of the city’s central business district. The raid resulted in the seizure of 450 kilograms of illegal plastic products and a total fine of ₹70,000 being levied.

The crackdown team consisted of assistant executive engineers, environmental engineers, health inspectors, and other civic officials.

Despite earlier warnings and circulars from MCC, Commissioner Asif expressed concern that the unauthorised use and sale of plastic products remains rampant. “We had already issued a circular banning these plastics. Yet, they continue to flood the market and damage our environment. Hence, we shifted our focus to bulk sellers who are still distributing these banned items,” he said.

Asif added that regular raids will continue, and in case of repeated violations, legal steps will be taken. “We won’t just fine them—we’ll book them under law,” he affirmed.

The MCC’s tougher stance is part of a broader effort to make Mysuru greener and more environmentally responsible.
