In a courtroom twist straight out of a suspense thriller, a man imprisoned for nearly two years for allegedly murdering his wife was left speechless when she walked into court—alive. The shocking incident took place recently at the Mysuru court and has unveiled alarming gaps in police procedure and investigation.
The case dates back to 2020, when Suresh, from Basavanahalli village in Kodagu’s Kushalnagar taluk, lodged a missing complaint for his wife, Mallige. Days later, police found an unidentified woman’s body near Bettadapura in Periyapatna. Based solely on suspicion and circumstantial claims, Suresh was arrested and charged with murder.
Despite the lack of concrete evidence, authorities filed a charge sheet and sent Suresh to judicial custody, where he remained for nearly 20 months. The turning point came when Mallige unexpectedly appeared in court—very much alive. Her sudden reappearance has triggered outrage and demands for justice.
Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge Gururaj Somakkal sharply criticized the police, noting gross investigative lapses. The court directed Mysuru SP N Vishnuvardhan to reopen the case and submit a full report by April 17.
Allegations surfaced that police coerced Suresh into confirming the dead woman’s identity as his wife. Even Mallige’s mother Gauri and son Krishna reportedly played roles in misidentifying the body.
Suresh’s family is demanding disciplinary action against the officers responsible, along with compensation for the injustice and emotional suffering endured.
