The controversy surrounding Tamannaah Bhatia’s appointment as brand ambassador for Mysore Sandal Soap refuses to die down, with Mysuru MP Yaduveer Wadiyar reiterating his opposition, while forest minister Eshwar Khandre defended the decision.
Yaduveer clarified he has no interest in commercial endorsements, adding, “Our royal family has never engaged in brand promotions. The Mysore Sandal brand stands for Kannada identity — a legacy we’ve always upheld.”
Criticizing the government’s choice, he asked, “Why pick a heroine just because it’s soap? Does soap have a gender? Couldn’t a cricketer or another cultural icon have been chosen instead?” He said selecting a Kannadiga would have created a stronger emotional connect and honoured Karnataka’s cultural roots.
Minister Khandre, however, stressed that the decision aimed to boost national and global reach of the heritage brand. “Tamannaah’s appointment is part of a wider strategy to elevate Mysore Sandal Soap’s profile. But Kannadigas will always be given 99% preference in such matters,” he said.
Housing minister Zameer Ahmed voiced his disagreement, pointing out that the Kannada film industry has many talented actresses who could have been considered. Yet, he urged not to dwell further now that the appointment has been made.
Zameer also rejected BJP state president BY Vijayendra’s claim of his involvement in the decision, suggesting it was based on outdated ties. Vijayendra had said there were many globally known Kannadigas better suited for the role.
