Mysuru district records 50% voting in GP elections till 1 PM

Mysuru: In the first phase of Gram Panchayat elections held in state, Mysuru district registered 50 percent voting here on Thursday by 1pm. The decision to provide 51 percent reservation for women has increased the number of women voters by a good margin.

Early in the morning in the 7 taluks of the district,  public thronged to the booths to cast their votes. The voting began at 8 pm in the district and by 9 am 12 percent votes were cast.   Out of 1412187 votes in the district, 398459 votes were cast by 11 am registering 28.22 percent. The voting booths in the outskirts of the city witnessed more drama as supporters were busy in persuading the voters.

Out of 266 GP constituencies election is being held for 4744 seats. Out of which 242 have been unanimously elected and nominations for 15 positions were not filed. Election is therefore being held for 4487 seats and 13339 contestants are in the fray for these seats.

The district administration confirmed that the electoral ballots were used in place of EVM’s.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is expected to arrive to the city in late afternoon in order to cast his vote in the Grama Panchayat election Siddaramanahundi.

It was reported that the voting was stopped at Keeralu when officials came to know that there were defects in the ballot paper. Thahasildhar Naveen Joseph visited the place, but by then already 22 voters had cast their votes in the wrong ballot.
