Mysuru: In a significant move to protect water bodies, P Shivaraju has directed officials to conduct a comprehensive survey of all lakes in Mysuru district and clear illegal encroachments within a week.
The directive was issued during a meeting of the District Level Lake Protection Force, where officials from multiple departments were instructed to prioritise the identification, documentation, and restoration of water bodies across the district.
Survey and boundary identification prioritised
Chairing the meeting, Shivaraju instructed the Survey Department and Tahsildars to undertake detailed documentation of all lakes, including proper boundary demarcation. He emphasised that clearly identifying lake limits is essential to prevent further encroachments and ensure effective conservation.
Officials have been asked to complete the survey on priority, following which immediate action will be initiated against unauthorised occupations.
Strict action against encroachments
The ADC directed all Tahsildars to begin eviction procedures as soon as encroachments are identified through the survey. Authorities have been given a tight timeline to act, signalling a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal occupation of lake areas.
Encroachments on lakes have been a longstanding concern in Mysuru, contributing to shrinking water bodies and affecting groundwater recharge.
Focus on pollution control
Officials from the Environment Department have been tasked with inspecting all lakes to monitor water quality and sanitation conditions. Shivaraju stressed the need for strict measures to prevent contamination of water bodies.
“Industrial waste and untreated sewage must not be allowed to enter lakes under any circumstances,” he said, calling for stringent enforcement and regular monitoring.
Multi-department coordination
The meeting saw participation from officials of the Survey Department, Revenue Department, Environment Department, and Water Resources Department. The Deputy Director of Land Records (DDLR) and Tahsildars were also present, reflecting a coordinated approach to lake protection.
Authorities believe that inter-departmental collaboration will be key to successfully restoring and maintaining lakes in the district.
Push for lake restoration
Shivaraju reiterated that all lakes must be restored and maintained in good condition. Restoration efforts are expected to include desilting, cleaning, and ensuring proper inflow and outflow systems.
Such measures are crucial not only for environmental conservation but also for sustaining water resources in the face of growing urbanisation.
Conclusion
The directive to survey lakes and remove encroachments marks a proactive step towards safeguarding Mysuru’s water bodies. With strict timelines and coordinated action, the administration aims to restore lakes and prevent further degradation, ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
