Mysuru: An exhibition called “Dr Paint Brush” is being organized at the Suchitra Art Gallery in the Kalamandir premises from 10 AM to 7 PM on August 4. The exhibition will showcase traditional Mysore-styled art, alongside contemporary paintings and folk art created by Columbia Asia Hospital (Mysuru) visiting clinician and consultant Paediatrician Dr Shailaja Prashanth.

The event will be inaugurated at 11 AM by Star of Mysore Managing Editor Vikram Muthanna, former minister Prof B K Chandrashekar, NPS International (Mysuru) Principal Shubha Achaiah, CAVA traditional painter Girija M, and JSS Hospital HOD (for Paediatrics) Dr Narayanappa are the guests of honour.

A total of 101 paintings will be on display at the exhibition. The proceeds of this event will go to SK Charitable Foundation Trust.

Mysore-styled paintings are known for their elegance, muted colours, and attention to detail. The themes for most of these paintings are depictions of Hindu gods and goddesses as well as various scenes from Hindu mythology. Other forms displayed in this exhibition are Gond art, Madhubani Painting, Warli Folk Painting, Pattachitra Painting, Rajasthani Miniature Painting, and Ganjifa art.

Dr Prashanth received her medical training at various university hospitals such as Aberdeen Royal infirmary in the United Kingdom. She is also a keen yoga enthusiast and is currently learning to play Carnatic music through the mandolin.

Art is a creative outlet that helps balance the daily stress associated with medical practice. Medical science saves lives, but art has its own healing properties, opines Dr Shailaja.

She says that her career in medicine is what has inspired her art. She balances her work with regular painting sessions at her in-house studio. It is a fine balance between my profession and my passion, and it is indeed a stress buster, she adds.
