Mysuru Pourakarmikas Get Permanent Jobs, Double Salary, and Renewed Hope
Mysuru: In a significant boost to the lives of civic workers, Social Welfare Minister and Mysuru District In-Charge HC Mahadevappa announced that manual cleaning jobs will gradually be replaced by technology in the years to come—just as modern warfare is now driven by tech.
Speaking at a function at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) on Friday, the minister handed over permanent appointment letters to 219 pourakarmikas from Mysuru City Corporation, part of the 10,000 pourakarmikas regularized across Karnataka.
Mahadevappa urged workers to educate their children and help them aim for better futures. “Permanent status means dignity, higher income, and social upliftment,” he said. With the move, pourakarmikas’ monthly income is expected to double from ₹17,000, and they will now receive full government benefits.
He also contrasted Karnataka’s policy with that of states like Madhya Pradesh, where civic workers still earn just ₹10,000—below minimum wage norms.
The minister promised that more workers would be regularized in upcoming phases and advised them to invest earnings wisely, ensuring family well-being and children’s education.
Responding to concerns about 88 temporary pourakarmikas who died while on duty, raised by former mayor Narayan, Mahadevappa instructed the MCC commissioner to take steps to support the families of the deceased workers.
Avinash S, a pourakarmika, shared: “Earlier, I struggled. Now, with a permanent job and higher pay, I finally feel secure and hopeful for my future.”
The event saw participation from MLA Tanveer Sait, DC Lakshikanth Reddy, MCC commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, and pourakarmika leaders.
