Mysuru: Residents of Yaraganahalli and surrounding areas in Mysuru are set to get relief as asphalting work on a long-neglected stretch of Dr Rajkumar Road will commence from April 21, officials from the Deputy Commissioner’s office confirmed.

The 300-metre stretch of the road has remained in a severely damaged condition for nearly two decades, causing hardship to residents, commuters, and students in the area. The development comes after sustained efforts and repeated follow-ups by local residents and activists.

Years of delay due to legal hurdles

The long delay in road development was primarily attributed to a land compensation dispute involving the Mysuru City Corporation and private individuals. A court stay on the matter had stalled the project for several years, preventing any repair or upgrade work.

During this period, the road—linking Teresian College Junction to Mahadevapura Main Road—deteriorated significantly, turning into a hazardous stretch for daily commuters.

Residents highlight safety concerns

Locals have long raised concerns about the poor condition of the road, citing frequent accidents and unsafe commuting conditions. Students from nearby educational institutions and office-goers using the route were among the worst affected.

In addition to safety risks, the damaged road led to severe dust pollution, contributing to respiratory issues among residents. The situation was further worsened by clogged and overflowing sewage, creating unhygienic conditions in the locality.

Activists push for urgent action

A delegation led by activist Mike Prakash visited the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday to press for immediate intervention. Although the Deputy Commissioner was unavailable due to an official visit to Bengaluru, his personal assistant assured the delegation that the asphalting work would begin next week.

The assurance marks a significant step forward in resolving an issue that has persisted for years despite repeated appeals from the public.

Hope and cautious optimism among locals

Residents have welcomed the announcement with cautious optimism. Many expressed relief that their long-pending demand is finally being addressed, while also emphasising the need for timely execution of the project.

Mike Prakash acknowledged the positive development and said the community would closely monitor the progress of the work. He added that residents are hopeful the project will begin as scheduled on April 21 and be completed without further delays.

Conclusion

The decision to commence asphalting work on Dr Rajkumar Road brings much-needed relief to residents of Yaraganahalli and nearby areas. After years of neglect and legal obstacles, the project represents a step towards improved infrastructure and safer commuting conditions.

However, the focus now shifts to implementation, with residents expecting authorities to deliver on their promise and ensure quality work within a reasonable timeframe.
