With temperatures crossing 37°C, Mysuru Zoo has launched special measures to keep its 1,600 animals, birds, and reptiles cool. On Tuesday, the city recorded 37.6°C, prompting the zoo to intensify efforts against heat stress.
Cooling measures in full swing
Water jets and sprinklers have been activated across enclosures, providing instant relief. Fans and coolers have been installed, particularly for heat-sensitive species like Great Apes, who also receive tender coconuts twice a day to stay hydrated.
Hydration-focused diets
To combat dehydration, primates are given ORS solutions along with water-rich fruits like watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber. Himalayan Black Bears receive ice blocks, while herbivores enjoy mud wallows to stay cool.
Monitoring and extra precautions
Digital thermometers track enclosure temperatures, and shaded rest areas offer refuge from the heat. Zoo officials remain vigilant, ensuring the comfort and well-being of the animals as the summer intensifies.
