Mysuru: The Mysuru Zoo will be reopening on February 3. As per Central Zoo Authority of India guidelines, the Department of Animal Husbandry has given a clearance based on the negative results of avian influenza by the National institute of High security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal. The forest secretary too has issued an order for the reopening in concurrence with Central Zoo Authority of India.
On Monday, NIHSAD released the results on “alien influence” in Mysore Zoo following the death of birds for which the cause suspected was H5N8. However, the report on Mysore Zoo has shown negative on alien influence which indeed has come as a big relief for the zoo and tourism authorities. Kamala Karikalan, Executive Director of Mysore Zoo disclosed the results after receiving the report from NIHSAD. A copy of the report was sent by Director of Animal Husbandry to the Secretary of State Forest Department.
The Mysore Zoo was closed for the first time in its history of 124 years following the death of six free-ranging and migratory birds in the zoo. Bird flu was strongly suspected. Mysore Zoo, considered as one of the major tourist destinations in the city, gets an average of 6500 visitors everyday.
