Mysuru Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has successfully rejuvenated 33 lakes under the MGNREGA scheme 2024-25, reviving water sources that were on the brink of drying up. This initiative not only restores water bodies but also generates employment for rural communities.

As part of the Amrita Sarovar project, ZP aims to rejuvenate 234 lakes to mark India’s platinum jubilee of independence. While 33 lakes have been revived, work is in progress on the remaining 201 lakes across various gram panchayat limits. The ₹4.4 crore project has already created 1,15,351 person-days of work for MGNREGA job cardholders.

Mysuru district has 2,991 lakes, with 2,805 under rural development and panchayat raj. Officials have surveyed encroachments on 1,200 lakes, clearing 800 so far. Mysuru taluk alone has 20 lakes facing encroachments.

ZP deputy secretary M Krishnaraju stated that under the Amrita Sarovar project, the lakes are being fenced, desilted, and beautified with plantations. ZP CEO S Ukesh Kumar emphasized that the rejuvenation efforts will improve groundwater levels and mitigate water scarcity for cattle. The remaining 201 lakes will be restored in a phased manner.
