Mysuru: Banana crop worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed and coconut trees uprooted due to the storm at Gowdanakatte in Hanagodu Hobli of the Taluk. Two transformers were burned by lightning.
Nendra banana crop on a six-acre plot owned by B. R. Mahadev, son of Ramegowda of the Village, was completely destroyed due to the hour-long thunderstorm in and around Gowdanakatte under Gurupura Gram Panchayat limits in the Taluk. This has resulted in a loss of around Rs. 24 Lakh.
Six electricity poles were also uprooted at Gowdanakatte and the power supply has been suspended since the night of May 11 and a huge banyan tree fell on a uprooted electricity wire near Gowdanakatte and the CHESCOM officials were carrying out repair work till evening of May 12.
Hundreds of trees were uprooted in the surrounding fields including Gurupura Tibetan Camp, near Gurupura School, Gowdanakatte and others. The villagers are relieved that no life has been lost. The roof of two houses in Gurupura has blown away. A tree fell on the house and the wall has collapsed.
