Mysuru: The National Highways Authority of India(NHAI) has unveiled a Rs 127 crore project to transform NH-766 into a safer, accident-free corridor by addressing eight black spots. This initiative involves the construction of overbridges, underbridges, and improved service roads, particularly along the Mysuru to Nanjangud stretch, which also links to Kerala and Tamil Nadu through Gundlupet in Chamarajanagar.
Over the past few years, rising interstate traffic, especially to popular tourist destinations such as Nanjangud, Bandipur, Ooty, Chamarajanagar, and Wayanad, has led to frequent accidents. Speeding, rash driving, and negligence have contributed to the dangers on this busy route.
NHAI identified eight black spots along this stretch based on accident data from the last three years. In response, the project includes high mast lights, speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, road signs, junction improvements, and road widening. These efforts aim to reduce the risk of vehicles skidding off the road.
Plans also include constructing an overbridge in Yelachageri, underpasses near Kalale gate, Hosahalli, Kadakola, and Bandipalya APMC, as well as additional underpasses at several other critical locations. These upgrades are designed to improve both vehicle and pedestrian flow, with construction progressing in phases.
The first phase of work is already underway, and NHAI is committed to completing the entire project in stages.
