NITES Warns of Protest Over Infosys Trainee Layoffs
Pune-based IT workers’ union, NITES, has issued a strong statement, warning that it may lead a protest alongside recently laid-off Infosys trainees if the government fails to take necessary action.
Infosys defended its decision, stating that performance assessments are an essential part of an employee’s growth. The company emphasized that over 98% of eligible trainees received their relieving letters, along with severance pay, career transition support, and counselling.
In its statement, Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) declared, “We stand firmly with these employees until they receive the fairness and respect they deserve. Today, we seek justice through official channels, but if authorities fail to act, we will mobilize a large-scale demonstration outside the Infosys campus.”
The union demanded swift action to rectify what it called “injustice,” insisting that those accountable for the terminations must face consequences.
Infosys, meanwhile, reiterated that trainees sign an Apprenticeship Registration Form, acknowledging the evaluation process. The company covers the entire cost of training and maintains a structured testing framework, including negative marking across three assessment attempts.
Addressing allegations that assessment criteria and syllabus were changed, leading to mass dismissals, Infosys’ Chief Human Resources Officer, Shaji Mathew, clarified that the company invests significantly in its trainees and aims for their success.
Earlier this month, Infosys faced backlash after terminating over 300 freshers at its Mysuru campus for failing internal assessments.
