Ongoing differences between destitute and other patients at KR Hospital

Mysuru: In view of the ongoing tensions between the destitute patients and the other patients, undergoing treatment in the same ward at KR Hospital (Jayadeva hospital building, second floor female ward and third floor male ward), hospital Superintendent Dr. Chandrashekar has decided to make a special ward just for the destitute.

On January 6, a few of the patients and their families, being tired of the “nuisance” created by the destitute, staged a protest by sleeping in the corridor of the ward and demanded that a separate ward be made for the destitute.

Speaking to Newskarnataka, Nagarathna, whose cousin suffers from high sugar and various other health complications and is undergoing treatment at the hospital said, “Some of the destitute have nervous issues. They are also human beings. We don’t want them to get disturbed and at the same time we don’t want to be in this ward. For the last couple of days, we have been facing a lot of problems due to which my cousin is also not able to rest. Hence, I request the authorities concerned to provide treatment to the destitute and normal patients in two separate wards.”

Upon inspection, it could be seen that the destitute in the female wards were found relaxing on the bed while their counterparts in the male wards were found sleeping on the floor. To some extent, the female ward was clean but the male wards with the destitute were found to have foul smell. When questioned about why some of the destitute were sleeping on the floor, Dr. Chandrashekar said, “If we make them sleep on the cot, they fall off due to weakness and hence, for the sake of their safety we have provided beds on the floor.”

Doctors lend the destitute a helping hand:

“As there is no one to look after the destitute, most of our doctors and even our PG students get their old clothes and some new cloths for the destitute”, added Dr Chandrashekar.
