Mysuru: Everyone is a part of this technology-driven world. Even tamed elephants in forest reserves are all set to be tagged with microchips.

It is learnt, as per Supreme Court directive, all tamed elephants in elephant training camps near forest reserves like Nagarahole, Biligiri Rangana (BR) hills and Bandipur and those under various temple administrations will be tagged using microchips. The process has already begun with veterinary doctors inserting microchips to tag 80 elephants including 42 in Nagarahole forest reserve.

Wrist watches’ battery size microchips will be placed behind the ear of each elephant and will contain all its details. Each chip will be assigned a number just like in aadhar cards and authorities feel the chips will help in providing good care and will prevent spreading of false information to the future generations.

Arjuna which carries the golden howdah during dasara is assigned number 000063AA97E followed by Balarama – 0006433874, Abhimanyu -000063AEE73 and ‘trouble maker’ Ganendra with 000715500001. In the same manner, all 80 elephants will have individual identification numbers.
