Piggy Banks turn saviours in many households post demonitisation

Mysuru: Those little piggy banks kept in a dusty corner of the house became the saving grace in many people’s lives after the demonitisation move came in. These banks that kept in their wombs the humble coins and Rs 5, Rs 10 and Rs 100 notes shot to fame in many households, after the starry status attached to Rs 500 and Rs 1000 vanished.

With exchange of the invalid notes becoming a herculean task, most people have resorted to opening these humble piggy banks at home to make their ‘both ends meet’. As getting change for the new Rs 2000 notes too have become difficult, piggy banks have come handy, serving their actual purpose.

All in all, the adults have realised the worth of the money that they have been dropping into their kids’ piggy bank because during the time of crisis, the children have come forward to give their little savings to the family wholeheartedly.

E Dasarathan, working as HR in private bank said “Everyone knows of the situation post Nov 8 declaration by the PM. I have waited in long queues for hours together to withdraw money and to deposit the old notes. However, after the withdrawn amount is spent, I requested my daughter to give me some notes of smaller denomination which I had given her as pocket money which she used to put it in the piggy box. Finally the saving of coins and notes of small value helped me to overcome the difficulties.”

It’s the same with A Christopher who works in a private courier firm. He says that his wife’s habit of maintaining a piggy bank has come as silver lining for the entire family.

“When I opened the piggy bank with her permission, I found that there were about Rs 2000 and all in small denominations. What a respite it was! I am spending this money very cautiously,” he says.

The demonitisation has taught several lessons to Indians, and the most important lesson is to never underestimate the power of small things!
