Mysuru: Director of Jeevadara Blood Bank, Girish, on Friday urged citizens to work towards a plastic-free India and emphasized the importance of planting and caring for trees to protect the planet.

He was speaking at an awareness event held at Devaraja Market to mark World Environment Day, organised jointly by Mysore City Corporation, KMPK Charitable Trust, and Jeevadara Blood Bank. The campaign was themed ‘Drop Plastic Bags, Pick Up Cloth Bags’.

Girish encouraged the public to ditch plastic bags and opt for cloth alternatives when shopping. “Waste segregation should start at home to reduce pollution. We must care for the plants we grow and embrace eco-friendly habits like walking or cycling to nearby places,” he said.

Former corporator Pramila Bharat highlighted that despite awareness, many educated individuals still rely on plastic, contributing to environmental degradation. “It’s time we take ownership and preserve nature for the next generation. The message ‘Grow trees, grow the nation’ must become a way of life,” she asserted.

To drive home the message, free cloth bags were distributed to shoppers and vendors as a sustainable alternative to plastic.

The event served as a strong reminder of every individual’s role in ensuring a greener, cleaner future.
