Tech Tricks vs. AI Cameras: The Cat-and-Mouse Game on Bengaluru-Mysuru Highway

MYSURU: On the Bengaluru-Mysuru Access-Controlled Highway (NH 275), motorists are leveraging technology to outsmart AI speed cameras. By using the ‘Radar Speed Camera Detector’ app, drivers slow down near cameras to avoid fines, only to resume overspeeding afterward.

The Highway, monitored by 60 AI cameras, enforces a 100 kmph speed limit, introduced after numerous accidents since the road’s opening in March 2023. Violators face fines of ₹1,000 and potential FIRs for speeds above 130 kmph. However, the app alerts drivers to camera locations, enabling them to adjust their speed temporarily.

While the app is popular, its limitations persist. The free version offers minimal features, and users must upgrade for reliable detection. Meanwhile, Police authorities argue the app’s tactic is flawed. ADGP Alok Kumar explained that AI cameras calculate average speed over stretches of the Highway, making momentary slowdowns ineffective.

Despite these challenges, the AI camera system has significantly reduced accidents, with most drivers adhering to speed limits. Only a minority exploit technology to evade penalties, presenting a growing issue for law enforcement.

Plans are underway to install 40 additional AI cameras, reducing gaps between them and ensuring consistent monitoring. This expansion aims to make the Highway safer by deterring reckless driving more effectively.
