Mysuru: In a move aimed at inculcating reading habit among Mahouths, Kavadis and their children who are in the city for Dasara, the Department of Public Instruction, Department of Public Libraries, City Central Library have set up a Tent School and Tent Library in Mysuru Palace premises. Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait inaugurated both the facilities on Monday.
To prevent kids from dropping out from the Ashram schools in their respective villages, due to temporary migration of their parents the Tent school and Tent Library have been introduced to help them continue their education without any barriers. Education department has deployed one full time teacher at the school and under the motto “Book for all”, the library is expected to reach out to children and enlighten them on various subjects.
The library will have 2000 books, mostly containing attractive illustrations, stories and biographies. Children can choose the books themselves. Not just books, news papers and children’s magazines are also kept here. They can also borrow books from the library free of cost. The library will be kept open between 9.30 am and 1.30 pm. Department of Libraries, University of Mysore researchers will be taking part as volunteers and guide the kids everyday. The children will be in the city for the next forty days.
“The library philosophy is to serve all. Library is the backbone of every school and hence we took up this initiative. These children can hardly get access to books. And also, we have planned to conduct 32 activities on handling books in the next 40 days”, City Central Library Deputy Director B Manjunath stated.
