Three new meet records created on day two of Dasara Athletic Meet

Mysore: If day one saw one record rewritten; day two saw three more records rewritten, two in men’s section and one in women’s category on September 23 in the state level Dasara athletic meet being held at Chamundi Vihar stadium here.

In the men’s section, in the 400 mtr hurdles, M J Ashwin of Bengaluru Urban created a new meet record by clocking 48.0 sec. He broke the previous record by Jayaprakash C Shetty of Bengaluru Urban who had clocked 48.1 sec in 2009. In 1500 mtr event, Vishwambar Kollekar of Bengaluru Rural created a new meet record by coming out with the impressive run to complete the race with a timing of 3:56:00 sec to erase the previous record by M D Manjunath from Mysuru who had clocked 4:01.05 sec in 2009. Ashwin M J, after creating new meet record in the 400 mtr hurdles, won his second gold in the 4×100 mtr relay along with a team comprising Aiyappa K M, Arjun Ajay and Gowri Shankar. In the high jump event, K Nithin from Mysuru division won gold by jumping 1.96 mtrs while in 110 mtr hurdles, Amarnath from Belgaum division stood first by clocking 14.6 sec.

In the women’s section, Prajna S Prakash of Bengaluru Urban who narrowly missed the record in the 100 mtr event on September 22, erased the eight-year-old record by finishing the 100 mtr hurdles with an impressive timing of 13.9 sec. The previous record was made by Gowramma of Mysuru division who had clocked 14.2 sec in 2008. Prajna S Prakash won her third gold in the 4×100 mtr relay along with Kaveri L Patil, Sushma Ram and Daneshwari. In the 1500 mtr run, Jyothi Kolekar from Bengaluru Rural stood first with a timing of 5:01.8 sec while in discus throw event, K U Likitha of Bengaluru Urban who threw the discus to 39.86 mt emerged as the winner. In the 400 mtrs run, H R Navami from Mysuru division stood first by clocking 55.6 sec.

Prajna S Prakash who works for the forest department said, “In the 100 mtr run, I missed the record by a whisker on Saturday. I was very positive in my approach and was here to create new meet record in 100 mtr hurdles. Really, I am delighted with my performance.” She will be heading for Chennai to take part in 100 mtr, 100 mtr hurdles and relay event in the open nationals which will be held at Chennai. Those who create new meet record will get cash award of Rs 10,000 apart from Rs 5000 which is given for winning a gold medal. As per Sports Minister Pramod Madhwaraj’s announcement, those who win gold medal will be getting Rs 25,000 from the state government.

On the completion of day two, Bengaluru Urban won nine gold medals-five in women’s section and four men’s category-while Mysuru division has pocketed eight gold medals-three in men’s and five in women’s section. On September 24, the four-day state level Dasara sports will conclude.
